Jigsaw: The employer's experience
Jigsaw employer: Lee Touhig
Managing Director, Jobs4, Doncaster
Jigsaw trainee: Darren Plowright, Account Manager
Training period: 6 months
"As a small growing business we want the right people with a good attitude, ambitious and with the vision to develop their own future as well as that of the business."
Jobs4 has found the Jigsaw programme a great benefit to its growth strategy and recruitment. The dedicated local recruitment website was started by Doncaster born and bred young entrepreneur Lee Touhig on the back of his web design company, Indigo Online.
Since setting up the Jobs4Doncaster site in September 2004, Lee has also launched sites for Sheffield and Leeds and has 96 towns and cities registered across the UK.
Lee has found the Jigsaw programme invaluable in enabling him to expand the business. One of the scheme's key features is the recruitment process that saves time and money in advertising and in sifting through CV's.
"The funding from Jigsaw has made a big impact. It has made it possible to recruit people and more crucially to retain staff who would otherwise move out of Doncaster to bigger centres where they are able to earn more," says Lee.
Lee is keen to develop prosperity in Doncaster and has employed seven people through Jigsaw. Not all have stayed, some have developed new skills and moved on to other jobs. Account manager Darren Plowright is currently employed through the Jigsaw programme. He has valuable customer service experience having worked as a call centre manager before being made redundant.
"As a small growing business we want the right people with a good attitude, ambitious and with the vision to develop their own future as well as that of the business," says Lee.
"Jigsaw gives us the opportunity to offer better training and a better salary to employ the right people and build the business from the right base."
Jigsaw Employer: Steve Chalupka
Transport and Technology Manager, Frogsons Waste Management
Jigsaw Trainee: Sam Makin, Laboratory Technician
Sam Makin is a young school leaver who left school after sixth form to get into work. He heard of Jigsaw when he went to his local Jobcentre Plus.
"I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, I thought maybe something in IT," says Sam, "Then I saw the job description for a lab technician at Frogsons Waste Management and liked the look of it."
Steve Chalupka, Transport and Technology Manager at Frogsons is enthusiastic about the benefits of Jigsaw to the business.
"The Jigsaw concept is superb!" says Steve, "the future of any business is the people that work in it so recruiting the right person is essential."
"Jigsaw takes the pressure off the employer in trying to identify the right candidate and the time and expenses of recruitment. The 6-month period also gives you peace of mind that you're not hiring the wrong candidate. We've been lucky, Sam is an extremely good candidate!" he added.
Sam meanwhile enjoys learning as he works "When you are at this age it's good to have this help because you don't have much experience" he said.
